DROP-INN CENTER

The Drop-In Shelter's objective is to keep families and children off the street and encourage them to start life anew.

The Center serves as a temporary shelter for “kariton” families and street children living within the vicinity of SPU Manila and along the streets of Manila. Children are fed, bathed and taken cared of while adults cook their food, do the laundry and attend to personal needs. The Center provides “napping rooms” where residents can sleep during the day as they build strength for another night of work scavenging or eking out a living from the streets . Children and adults are also provided with non-formal education such as basic reading, writing, arts and numbers. Regular medical check-ups are provided to all. Health and hygiene classes are also conducted.

To date, the Center has already rehabilitated more than 62 families of over 300 individuals. They are now back to their places of origin and, through the micro-financing granted them by the Center, are earning a decent livelihood. Most of the families returned to places such as Samar, Boracay, Tarlac, Mindoro, Cavite and Laguna while some were hired as employees of SPU Manila associates and benefactors.
